Greetings The Southeast Asian Breast Cancer Symposium
HUE 2023, VIET NAM

The Southeast Asian Breast Cancer Symposium (SEABCS) is a gathering of the region’s cancer survivors, patient advocates, health professionals, researchers, and policy makers in an event to exchange ideas, share successful strategies, the latest in breast cancer, as well as the many challenges that face the breast cancer community on a personal, local, national, regional and international level.

The Bright Future Foundation, Hue Central Hospital and Global Focus on Cancer are pleased to be the hosts for this year’s conference. We are once again thankful for the support of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer for their contributions in supporting the event.

This year, the theme is “Breast cancer in a post-covid world; lessons learned and pathways forward”. The conference seeks to improve the quality of life of breast cancer survivors by enhancing key aspects of the cancer continuum of care from prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, palliative care to survivorship. It will also provide advocates with data and best practices needed to influence positive change in the health systems of their countries. It is also an opportunity for the region to continually find common ground for collaboration.

SEABCS 2022 will be a 2-day hybrid forum running from August 25 to August 26, 2023. Participants can either attend in person or engage virtually via Zoom. The in person sessions will be held at the Indochine Palace, Hue City, Vietnam.

SEABCS has been a catalyst for the building of an informal-regional coalition for women’s cancers in the region. Previous SEABCS host countries are Vietnam (2016) Myanmar (2017) Malaysia (2018) Thailand (2019), Indonesia (2021- virtual conference) and the Philippines (2022- hybrid).

Past conferences conducted training and capacity building with the help of the Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC) Alliance, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Breast Cancer Initiative (BCI) 2.5, Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI), International Agency for Research in Cancer, Oncology Nursing Society, Reach to Recovery, the Women’s Empowerment Cancer Advocacy Network (WE CAN), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the International Cancer Control Partnership.

Each session at this year’s SEABCS will be a conversation open to all. Registration is free of charge.

Dr. Partha Basu

Head of the Cancer Early Detection, Prevention & Infections Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO)

Dr. Partha Basu is Head of the Early Detection, Prevention, and Infections Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO), France. Dr. Basu did his MD in Obstetrics and Gynecology, post-doctoral fellowship in Gynecological Oncology, and PhD in Clinical Oncology. He has been awarded the honorary FRCOG by the Royal College of Ob & Gyn, UK recently. Before joining IARC in 2015, he was head of the Department of Gynecological Oncology at the National Cancer Institute in India. Dr. Basu is well known for his research that has informed several guidelines and recommendations from the WHO. His research has been instrumental to recent events that will promote equity in preventing cervical cancer, such as the WHO concluding that a single dose of HPV vaccine delivers solid protection, authorities recommending marketing authorization for a new low-cost HPV vaccine in India, and WHO recommending a simple and affordable technology (thermal ablation) for treatment of cervical precancers. Evidence generated from his study on the long-term impact of triennial screening for breast cancer with clinical breast examination (CBE) will be very valuable for the WHO’s global breast cancer initiative. Dr. Basu has been supporting countries across the globe to implement cancer screening programs with equity and quality through the project named Cancer Screening in Five Continents (CanScreen5). He is leading implementation research projects aiming at improving cancer early detection in socio-economically disadvantaged populations in three countries in Europe and in India. He has significantly contributed to building capacity in delivering quality assured cervical and breast cancer early detection services in several low and middle-income countries. Dr. Basu has 236 publications in peer-reviewed journals with more than 6000 citations.

Marsha Rich Rosner currently works at the Ben May Department for Cancer Research, University of Chicago. Marsha does research in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Cancer Research. Marsha Rosner’s lab focuses on the signaling mechanism that leads to the generation of tumor cells and their progression to metastatic disease. Her research has led to a way to treat resistant breast cancers by repurposing two older drugs. Studies by Rosner and her team have led to potential therapeutic treatments that could extend beyond breast cancer to others, including lung, kidney, uterus and prostate cancers and leukemia. Rosner started with a finding that provided insights into how cells generate energy and metabolize foods, and that led to novel ideas about how to treat resistant cancers. Rosner employs a diverse group of colleagues from around the world, from undergraduates to postdoctoral fellows.
